Traditional dental impressions use messy, bad-tasting putty that is uncomfortable for the patient. Digital scans are a modern alternative to dental impressions that allows us to take accurate images of the smile without discomfort or mess.
Dr. Jenicke uses computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software and works with local dental labs to create custom-made dental crowns. CAD/CAM software uses a single cloud-based platform for dentists to design and manufacture custom prostheses. Computer-aided design creates a 3-dimensional image that dentists can modify to each patient's smile. Then, labs manufacture prostheses from this digital design.
During crown treatment, Dr. Jenicke prepares the treated teeth and then takes a digital intraoral scan of the smile. Then, she sends this scan to a dental lab. Using these detailed scans, technicians create dental crowns out of durable, tooth-colored porcelain materials. Once the dental crowns are complete, they can cover dental implants, damaged or fractured teeth, and worn tooth enamel.
When you think of dentures, you probably imagine removable dentures that you keep in a glass at your bedside. However, removable dentures can slip around the mouth, even with adhesive. Traditional dentures may restore the look of the smile but not the function of the teeth and gums.
